Layton’s birthday fell on a Wednesday, so we had his party on Saturday. But, we couldn’t let the day past without making it a little special.
We let him open a present
and then I made him cupcakes to take to his class at school. He wanted all different color ones, so I tried to oblige. He of course wanted a green one for himself.
They all sang him happy birthday
and then it was time to dig in! Those kids are so silly!
Dallin participated in his first pinewood derby this year. He has been in scouts for almost two years, but for some reason they didn’t do it last year. He went online and looked at lots of different car designs and picked it out. Then Nathan drew it on the block of wood and helped him cut it out.
Dallin did all of the painting himself. He wanted a powder blue car.
And then the night came for the race! First the weigh in:
He and Hayden are the only bears, so they raced each other. I think Dallin was a little nervous.
Dallin’s car won! Then they raced again in different lanes. See that big smile on Haden’s face.
It never left him, even though his car came in second. Instead of being sad that he lost, he became Dallin’s biggest fan! It was so cute and so sweet. That is a young man who truly knows how to be a good friend and a good sport. We told Dallin afterward that he should try to be just like Hayden!
Then the winners of the different age groups raced. It is hard to see, but Dallin won by a centimeter or so.

Dallin was very proud of his winning car. It was a very fun night!
For fun, we like to look around and see what parks in the area we haven’t been to and then give them a try. We learned of one on the northeast side of Jacksonville and one Saturday decided to head over there.
It must be a relatively new park because many of the plants looked fairly newly planted. There were some pretty little trails, a stream, a pond, and some wooden walkways. I have a feeling that in a few years when the plants that they put in really have a chance to grow and get established it will be an absolutely beautiful park. Not that it isn’t pretty now, but give it a few years and it will be truly gorgeous.
Layton had the opportunity to have one of his friends, Dillon, from school come over for a while after school. We started the afternoon with Happy Meals, which both boys loved.
Then they played around the house until it was time for Mandy and Dallin to come home.
We were then joined by a couple of kids from the neighborhood and really started having fun. First it was an after school picnic.
Then a walk to the duck pond.
And then some fun sliding down the big hill.
