Election Day

I don't normally post something twice in one day, but since the goings on at our house tonight were so related to the goings on in America right now, I thought it better to post this now rather than later. During dinner tonight, Dallin asked us who we voted for today. Since our views are very conservative, even though he is not exactly the perfect candidate, we chose to cast our vote for McCain since his ideals are closer to our ideals than Obama's. Dallin told us that he had voted today too. He couldn't remember the name of the person he voted for, but he told us that it was the one that had dark skin. Nathan and I couldn't help but laugh at the fact that Dallin had voted completely opposite from us. We asked him why he voted that way and he said it was because Obama was wearing a black suit just like he and Daddy wear. Sounds like as good a reason to vote for him as some of the other reasons I've heard. As we were watching the election results come in on the TV, Dallin asked us again who we voted for. Only now he was becoming very concerned that we didn't vote the same as him. He asked us to change our vote. And then began to cry when we explained that we couldn't change our vote. We told him that he could change his vote, but he didn't like that idea either. I had to go out to the store to grab a loaf of bread and a few other necessities and when I returned, Dallin greeted me in the garage with a big hug and told me that he had decided to change his vote. Then I began to feel guilty for making him feel bad about casting his vote when it really was of no consequence. Why didn't I give into him and tell him that I would vote like him and be on "his team" as he referred to it? It would have saved a lot tears if I had. I sometimes complain about my children being stubborn, but it is very obvious to me at this moment that I am much more stubborn than they are. So tomorrow I think I'll make a special effort to let Dallin know how much I love him and that I'll always be on his team, no matter what choices he makes in life. In the future I am sure there will be many things that we will have opposing opinions about, but I hope that I can teach my children that no matter what choices they make I will always love them and stand behind them and support then in all that they do. I will just hope and pray that in the future he will base his decisions on something more substantial than the color of a person's suit.

Haley and Bre both voted for McCain in their classes. When I asked them why, Breanna said it was because Obama wanted to stop the war and raise taxes. Haley said that it was because McCain likes tacos!

I started not to vote...but then how could I tell others to vote when I didn't. Whoever I voted for, it is far more important that I am for who won. I pray sincerely that the leaders of our country and all countries will listen to the inspiration that they are given and follow it; and I believe that God is willing to inspire them. But then, tacos are a very good reason too.
